Living Murray Icon sites – Hattah Lakes and Lindsay -Wallpolla

Hattah Lakes and the Lindsay-Wallpolla floodplains are located on the Murray River, upstream and downstream of Mildura respectively.  These areas are two of the six, nationally identified, 'Living Murray' Icon sites that have been targeted for improvement and maintenance of ecological values.

GHD is working with local catchment management and water resource agencies to further investigate the environmental characteristics of wetland and wetland complexes in the Hattah Lakes, Lindsay and Mulcra components of the Murray River floodplains.

Previous studies proposed various structural works options at a broad scale – the assessments further refined ecological targets and management and works options.

The Hattah Lakes project involved geotechnical investigations of the proposed regulator sites; the identification of any environmental, cultural heritage and social issues; and the assessment of construction access and maintenance routes to minimise costs.

The works include the design of control regulators, block banks, a pump station, erosion control measures and fish passages.  As an integral part of the design, the implementation, maintenance and operational costs were calculated for various options.
