Michael Herbert Bridge, South Australia

Share on:

GHD worked collaboratively with the client, City of Holdfast Bay, on the development of the Michael Herbert Bridge (formerly King Street Bridge) which opened with a well-attended community opening ceremony.

GHD was intricately involved in all aspects of the project including architectural, structural, civil and traffic, geotechnical investigation, environmental risk assessments, urban design, procurement services, superintendent services and construction phase services.

GHD's Paul Clarke offered, "This project demonstrates how GHD's integrated ‘One GHD' culture can deliver excellent results for our clients. The team was fully committed and proactive in making this project a success."

The project was delivered with the 'One GHD' philosophy at its core. The Adelaide team worked closely with the Victorian Operating Centre who delivered the structural bridge engineering and geotechnical services.

The bridge was named in honour of Michael Herbert, a flying officer who had been missing for almost 39 years after his Canberra bomber went down in the jungle near the Laos border while conducting a bombing mission in Vietnam. His remains and those of his fellow crewman, Pilot Officer Robert Carver, from Toowoomba in Queensland, were found near the wreckage of their aircraft and brought home to Australia in August 2009.

In recognition of the indigenous community, the bridge is titled the Michael Herbert Bridge (Wodlibulto Wadlakatta).

At the 2012 Engineers Australia’s Engineering Excellence Awards (South Australia division), GHD, in collaboration with the City of Holdfast and Fulton Hogan, received a High Commendation in the Project Infrastructure Category for its work on the Michael Herbert Bridge.
