Mission Beach goes online

The community of Mission Beach, between Townsville and Cairns, now has a modern sewerage system after Cardwell Shire Council engaged GHD to project manage the installation of a complete sewage reticulation network and treatment plant upgrade.

The scheme involves over 32km of reticulation and collection system, 11 pump stations and 45km of rising mains, and is located in sandy, high groundwater conditions in developed residential precincts.

Most significantly, high environmental values were maintained throughout, including protection of native vegetation. There were also no impacts on local fauna that features a cassowary population.

GHD Principal Engineer Jeff Crofts reports, “We successfully confronted sensitive environmental and difficult topography issues to deliver a sewerage scheme that was put to the test during the ravages of Cyclone Larry in early 2006, with minimal overflow.” The scheme is now completed and GHD continues to assist the council with ongoing project management activities.
