Notional Seaway Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)

The Coordinator General engaged GHD to develop an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Notional Seaway Project in Queensland.

The project centered on a cruise ship terminal and marina for yachts and other vessels. As part of this process, it was necessary to understand and identify the land use planning and land use regulatory matters that were relevant to the proposal.

A number of key issues were identified for the project:

  • Community acceptance and social impacts associated with perceived changes in access to the seaway and associated community facilities
  • Ecological impacts on the marine habitat of the seaway and broadwater, in particular protected species such as pipe fish
  • Impacts on coastal processes and the wave profiles of South Stradbroke Island

GHD tailored the methodology to address these issues. Appropriate dredging techniques and procedures were developed that were consistent with the environmental constraints of the project.

GHD approached the concept design and assessment according to its understanding of the relevant key issues and with an understanding the project needed to meet the expectations of the Coordinator General’s Office and relevant regulatory agencies. GHD delivered an EIS that would withstand this high level of scrutiny.
