Redland Shire Council – North Stradbroke Island Landfill Closure

GHD was engaged by Redland Shire Council to prepare the design and documentation for the closure and capping of the North Stradbroke Island landfill. The landfill is situated off the main road between Dunwich and Point Lookout in bushland.

The design was not straightforward as North Stradbroke Island is predominantly a sand island. Alternatives had to be found to replace the standard clay cap. In addition the landfill included various pits and mounds around the site.

The design required the satellite landfills to be moved to the main landfill, the landfill mound was to be shaped and a plastic liner capping was to be used. Other design features included an infiltration basin to allow stormwater collected in slotted pipes on top of the plastic liner to infiltrate back into the groundwater, and various stormwater controls around the site to minimise erosion. The vegetation selected for capped and un-capped areas are native species and endemic to the area.

GHD was also involved in the capping works undertaking superintendent duties as well as contract administration tasks for all of the four separate portions of the work.

Since working on this project, GHD has been engaged by Redland Shire Council to prepare a post-closure management plan and a landscape master plan for the site.
