Oxley-Wacol WWTP upgrade - EIS

GHD developed two and three-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models for Brisbane Water as part of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIS) for a proposed upgrade of the Oxley and Wacol wastewater treatment plants (WWTP).

The assessment involved quantifying the impact of the existing wastewater treatment plant configurations as well as determining the relative impacts of two proposed upgrade options on receiving water quality.

Water quality health indicators, including ammonia, nitrate, organic nitrogen, reactive phosphorus, chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, temperature and salinity, were modelled.

Complex processes simulated as part of the project included:

  • Nitrification
  • Eutrophication
  • Mineralisation
  • Absorption of organic matter
  • Sedimentation
  • Re-suspension and exchanges occurring at the seabed/water column interface
  • Water column/air interface

Model results were vital in the selection of a preferred WWTP option.
