Phulbari Coal Project, Bangladesh

The Phulbari coal basin lies in the north-west of Bangladesh and contains 570Mt of Permian coal resource at depths of 150-300m, overlain by 120m-thick saturated tertiary sandy sediments. Asia Energy Corporation (Bangladesh) Pty Ltd was investigating the feasibility of an open cut mine to supply coal for export and in-country industries.

GHD was involved in the initial phase of work on this project in 1999, and has most recently completed the definitive feasibility study. We also prepared a Competent Persons Report to support capital raising on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.

A coal resource, geotechnical and hydrogeological exploration program was planned and managed with GHD personnel continuously on site over a 10 month period to mid-2005. The work included coring and open hole of over 25,000m from 105 boreholes, special preparation of coal for shipment to overseas laboratories, hydrogeological and geotechnical testing (over 30 bores), surface water system geomorphology and surface geophysical traverses (gravity and magnetics over 50km) to better define basin margins.

Relocation of a township of 35,000 people was a significant part of the project development. A design concept for the new township, including flood protection, infrastructure and housing layout were, completed. GHD also completed the design for the mine infrastructure, including water management, coal processing and stockpiles, mine personnel facilities and flood protection.
