Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun provides smelter grade alumina to Australia, New Zealand and export markets. The Yarwun Refinery is about 10km northwest of Gladstone, Central Queensland, with its Residue Management Area (RMA) approximately 10km west of the refinery.

GHD has been involved on this project since the site selection and design phase, when our Tailings group undertook the site study and detailed design for the RMA, including an extensive geotechnical mapping program and installation of a groundwater monitoring network.

Since the commissioning of the refinery in 2004, GHD has undertaken long term engineering support for the RMA operation through their Hydrology and Geotechnical groups, with many of the people involved in the design still providing ongoing advice. This has included interpretation of monthly data, piezometer monitoring data, annual dam integrity inspections and input into the long term planning.

GHD Gladstone teams are regularly involved in undertaking site inspection and additional monitoring support of these services.

Our primary customer groups are those who are in the business of processing, refining, handling, manufacturing or treating petrochemicals, gases, water, waste, bulk materials, minerals, food products or manufactured products for use in other processes or for sale to others.
