Rural metering guidelines

Natural Resources Environment and The Arts (NRETA, Northern Territory) wanted to encourage more efficient water use through a licensing and water allocation planning process. The process is dependant on reliable and comprehensive water use information. Metering guidelines were developed to suit the quality control needs of licensed water users and resource managers.

A scheme for metering of private rural water use in the Daly and Darwin Rural regions was started. A pilot phase would identify 300 sites where meters were to be installed.

Guidelines were prepared for the selection of water meters, options identified for bulk purchase of meters and a scheme developed for metering rural water use for the Daly River catchment and Darwin Rural area. Specific objectives were:

  • Development of a standardised scheme for water extraction that provides reliable, accurate and comparable data for water modeling and allocation planning purposes
  • Provide guidelines for the selection and purchase of meters for a pilot scheme

Outcomes include the development of a report that resulted in the optimal selection and cost-effective purchase of meters for the pilot study.
