Sino Iron Ore Project

The Sino Iron Project is Australia's first major magnetite project and the second largest project currently under construction in the Pilbara.

Due to its remote location 1200 kilometres north of Perth in Western Australia, the client CITIC Pacific Mining Management Pty Ltd required the development of dedicated infrastructure to support the USD3.5billion greenfields sino iron project.

The scale, complexity and contribution to regional infrastructure sets the project apart. It comprises of mine operations, ore concentrate plant, 25km slurry pipeline delivering product to port, concentrate filter, 6 million tonne pelletising plant, stockyard and material handling systems, 450MW gas-fired power station, 51gigelitre desalination plant, power transmission and transforming facility, water supply network in plant area, accommodation, new port and transhipment facilities.

The Australian subsidiary of the Chinese EPC Contractor, MCC, is delivering the infrastructure associated with the project. GHD has been appointed to assist MCC's main design contractor, NETC (based in China) to review their designs for compliance with Australian and West Australian standards. GHD is also undertaking the structural design calculations and risk analysis for the project, as well as tailings dam stability and a safety analysis review.

The first production and ramp up for the project will start from mid-2010.
