Southland Lignite – Solid Energy New Zealand PAG L3 Geotechnical Assessment

GHD was commissioned by Solid Energy to provide geotechnical and geological assessment of 7 km of soft sediment core through the Miocene deposits of the Gore Lignite Measures.

The study was required to delineate the geological and geotechnical parameters and domains of the basin sediments in the context of the proposed open cast lignite mine.

GHD provided an Australasian team of geologists and geotechnical engineers to complete the nine month study working on site in Mataura supervising in situ testing, core logging and sampling. Our Artarmon laboratories completed the geotechnical testing for classification, strength and permeability of the materials, with the data being collated and presented in a geotechnical interpretive report to Solid Energy to assist with their final feasibility stage decision making
