Sunshine Motorway Upgrade

In 2006, the Queensland Department of Main Roads appointed GHD as Project Manager of the $66 million upgrade of the Sunshine Motorway at Sippy Downs on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The upgrade provided a vital piece of infrastructure for a thriving residential, business and academic community.

Sippy Downs is known as the Sunshine Coast’s education precinct, housing the University of the Sunshine Coast, Chancellor State College and a number of private schools. The upgrade, forming part of the South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program, provides vital infrastructure for the continued development of the Sunshine Coast. 

The upgrade is one of the largest road infrastructure projects undertaken on the Sunshine Coast. Effective project management is playing a crucial role in managing five separate contractors on site, and coordinating works under heavy traffic. 

As the Project Manager and Superintendent for the contract, GHD is responsible for overseeing the delivery of this project, which involves:

  • Design coordination
  • Contract administration
  • Program Coordination and management
  • Cost control and management
  • Risk assessment
  • Community liaison and communication management
  • Surveillance of traffic management
  • Surveillance of environmental management.
