Regulating Murray River Flows (Australia)

Improving the environmental health of the Murray River is a concern for all Australians. The Murray Darling Basin Authority regulates the river system. It offered to pay landholders affected by the release of water from storages.

GHD worked with the Murray Darling Basin Authority, the community and technical experts to identify the impact of released water on floodplain properties, to develop consistent assessment principles and to register the impact on title via easements.

This project enables the Murray Darling Basin Authority to sustain its release of water between Hume Dam and Lake Mulwala to meet its commitments downstream for town water supply, irrigation and environmental flows.

Integrated Water Management (IWM) is a strategy that brings together all facets of the water cycle — water supply, sewage management, water treatment and stormwater management — to achieve strong social, environmental and economic benefits.

In Australia and many countries around the world, it has become apparent that water demand and water supply are not in balance. The water industry has historically addressed this imbalance by accessing new native water sources to meet the upsurge in demand. However, as natural water resources become increasingly scarce, this approach is clearly not sustainable.
