Third Rail Receival Facility

GHD designed the third rail receival facility as part of the AUD750 million expansion of the RG Tanna Port in Gladstone Queensland.

The design and construction of the third rail receival facility in Gladstone is a unique engineering feat due to the challenging design requirements, difficult site conditions and fast track construction.  

The facility included, five conveyor gantries, a modular 500 tonne rail dump hooper, a dump station 10 meters below the water table connecting to a 180 meter long transfer tunnel, six feeders with a design feed rate of 150 tonnes per hour and well as numerous transfer designs and modifications.

As principal consultant GHD:

  • Liaised with the client to develop the project brief
  • Undertook preliminary design
  • Provided detailed structural and civil engineering design
  • Provided services in materials handling
  • Undertook mechanical and electrical engineering design
  • Provided 3D modelling of the site
  • Prepared construction documents
  • Managed the tender process
  • Inspected the site
  • Provided support during construction

Once competed, the project increased annual throughput at RG Tanna Port from 30 million tonnes to 68 million tonnes and processes 6000 tonnes per hour.
