Traeger Park sporting complex is the main sporting facility for Alice Springs and is a leading Australian venue for national and international sporting events.

In 2003, GHD prepared the master plan for the redevelopment of Traeger Park. This process involved public consultation, scoping and concept development for any future upgrading of the facility.

GHD was also engaged to undertake the design and specification for the light towers, lighting and associated electrical infrastructure suitable for night-time professional sporting activities and to a standard that allows colour television broadcasts.

In 2006, GHD was engaged to design a new grandstand at Traeger Park. The project included documenting the demolition and termination of services of the existing grandstand, and providing brief development, engineering design and concept and preliminary architectural design for the new facility.

The project involved a high level of consultation and review with a major emphasis on cost control to meet a tight budget.

The overall concept for the facility was:

  • A three-storey building including change rooms and umpires rooms on the ground floor
  • A function room and public seating/viewing area on the first floor
  • Coaches/scorers/media boxes on second floor

The design integrates with the existing facilities; emphasises environmental sustainability, whole-of-life operating costs and a low level of maintenance; and takes into account the surrounding environment.

GHD’s Traeger Park grandstand delivers quality sport and recreation opportunities to the Alice Springs community and wider Territory and Australian populations.
