Urban Design and Planning in Canberra’s University Precinct

A vibrant mixed-use residential, cultural and arts precinct, will create a ‘dynamic heart’ for Canberra that connects the city with the Australian National University.

The Childers Street project arose out of a Australian Capital Territory Planning and Land Authority’s (ACTPLA) City West Master Plan, which was completed in May 2004. The Childers Street precinct is part of a major focus on urban regeneration by the ACT state government.

This new technology and arts 'smart zone' is seen as a catalyst for long-term sustainable development in central Canberra. Investment in a strong central business area is vital for Canberra. The Childers Street project aims to integrate several current opportunities – the development of a City West Arts Precinct and the Australian National University’s need for business facilities, student residential facilities and off-campus research facilities. The ACTPLA commissioned a Concept Plan and Style Guide Report as the first stage of the Childers Street precinct public realm project. EDAW Gillespies and GHD completed this work in May 2005.

In October 2005, the ACTPLA commissioned GHD to carry out the design, documentation and superintendence of the construction and post-completion stages on the second stage of the Childers Street PublicRealm Project. The construction phase is now complete. GHD was involved throughout the project from preliminary concept stages through to detailed design, implementation and project management.
