The South Beach development in Western Australia is a
joint project between Stockland and LandCorp. Comprising over
400 lots, the project is focused on providing a sustainable
living environment for the local community.
The Public Transport Authority commissioned GHD in 2001 to
assist in preparing the former Robbs Jetty Freight Terminal for
redevelopment for residential properties. Ownership of the terminal
site transferred to LandCorp, which formed a joint venture with
Stockland, the owner of the adjacent land. GHD was retained as
LandCorp’s environmental consultant during the entire project, and
was engaged by Stockland to provide specialist advice in relation
to the adjacent South Fremantle Landfill.
In September 2008, the Urban Development Institute of Australia
(UDIA) awarded GHD, Stockland and LandCorp the National Award for
Excellence in the categories of Residential Development over 150
Lots and Medium Density Housing. These awards recognise excellence
in the marketing, design and construction of medium density housing
developments that have supported integration with nearby facilities
and fostered a relationship with the neighbourhood to meet the
needs of the local community.
The South Beach development was also recognised at the 2007 WA
UDIA Awards, winning an award for Medium Density and Urban Renewal
and the National Award for Medium Density Housing. The
national judge of the 2008 awards noted that the project resolved
numerous planning, environmental, engineering and public relations
challenges to the highest standard.
