Waiouru Moving Target Range (MTR)

GHD has been involved in the development of a Moving Target Range (MTR) for the New Zealand Army’s new light armoured vehicles (LAV).

Located in the Military Training Area north of Waiouru Army Camp, the facility provides training in the mobile engagement of moving targets by the LAV commanders and crew.

The project included a detailed design of the facility comprising three moving target locations, two stabilisation tracks, a static firing point and associated infrastructure including buildings and access. A key aspect of the design was in determining range layouts that met safety requirements, addressed the topographical layout and boundaries of the site, while also ensuring overall training requirements were maintained.

Due to the remoteness of the site and to be cost effective, the design needed to be robust in terms of weather and likely construction methodologies and be self sufficient. GHD services were extended to provide construction supervision and commissioning of the facility, which officially opened in October 2008.
