Water Treatment Automation and Centralisation (A+Ction)

As part of the A’Ction Alliance comprising GHD, Leicon-Notley and the Water Corporation Alliance, we have played a key role in an AUD50M brownfield treatment control system and SCADA upgrade project.

The project was initiated to raise the level of automation, reduce the need for operator intervention onsite and allow remote monitoring and operator control as well as enhance site security. Works included the automation and control of six metropolitan Water Treatment Plants (WTP), two regional water treatment plants and extensive borefields associated with the treatment plants.

One of the key challenges faced by the Alliance was the implementation and integration of modern technologies and redundant fibre optic rings into a brownfield project.

GHD provided the engineering and detailed design, instrumentation and control aspects of the upgrade. The design included onsite systems at each of WTP’s, borefield radio telemetry systems for the Gwelup, Mirrabooka, Jandakot, Wanneroo and Pinjar borefields, WAN communications to a central control centre and interfaces to the corporate MIS and data historian.

The upgrade has provided high quality modern assets, new HMI standards, new chemical dosing standards, embedded WAN security and standardised assets. Overall, this is resulting in improved operations and maintainability, highly automated water treatment processes with minimal operator intervention, and improved performance due to better data and information.
