Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Burgos Wind Project


The EDC Burgos Wind Power Corporation engaged GHD to advise on the environmental and social impact of a wind farm project.

GHD prepared an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study for the 165 MW wind farm located in a 618 ha project development block that is situated in a site declared as a cultural resource (Palpalokada Landscape) and reserved as an area for tourist development.

Fisherman's Bend Buffer Assessment, Places Victoria


GHD was invited by the Victorian Government to prepare a Buffer Assessment Report that presents a suitable approach to the separation of emissions from existing or newly proposed industry and the encroachment of these areas by sensitive uses (and vice versa) as part of the urban renewal development at Fisherman’s Bend (FBURA).

Buffer constraints were assessed using the recently revised separation distance guidelines issued by EPA. It identified industries that had a history of off-site impact as well as those that were in transition to other, less constrained localities.

South Road Superway


The Urban Superway Joint Venture invited GHD to join them as the designer for the construction of the South Road Superway in South Australia.

A significant challenge of this project was the narrow corridor within which the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) of South Australia planned to deliver a new managed motorway standard elevated roadway with up to four lanes in each direction, over an existing arterial road with two lanes in each direction and almost no new land acquisition.

World’s Quietest Caterpillar Truck


GHD has won international acclaim for its scientifically engineered quiet Caterpillar truck. Developed to comply with stringent noise standards in the Hunter Valley, the trucks are 20 times quieter than an untreated truck.

GHD scientists used advanced acoustics technology to limit the noise emitted by the engine, fan, transmission and differential of the Caterpillar 789C off-highway trucks. Reducing the noise level of the trucks was important because of the proximity of the nearby town of Muswellbrook, just 6km away. The stringent noise standards are regarded globally as industry-leading for open cut coalmines.

James Forrest

James Forrest

James has a broad range of experience with air quality including development and implementation of management and monitoring plans, policy development and project management and implementation. He is skilled in the areas of meteorological and air dispersion modelling (using TAPM, AUSPLUME and CALPUFF), air quality monitoring, data collection and analysis, project management, policy development and reporting. James also has experience in completing noise assessments including noise monitoring and modelling (using CadnaA).

James's experience with GHD has included the successful delivery of air quality and noise assessments that have formed components of Environmental Impact Assessments. He has also been involved with a number of air quality and noise studies. In addition, James has a solid understanding of Commonwealth and State air quality and noise legislation and requirements.

Barry Cook – Victoria

Barry has more than 30 years’ experience within the environmental consulting and meteorological sectors. He has an extensive knowledge of meteorological analysis, emission characterisation and weather forecasting to complement 3D wind field, meteorological and air pollution dispersion modelling. His previous involvement as a meteorologist at environmental consulting firms, EPA Victoria and Mount Isa Mines provide him with a depth of service offering appreciated by his clients.

Barry has managed air quality impact assessments for a wide range of industries including LNG production, mining, metals smelting, resource extraction, manufacturing, power generation, municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, intensive agriculture and transport (rail and road). He also has extensive experience in consulting to state and local government agencies, technical peer review for environmental regulators and local governments, litigation (courts/panels/tribunals) and best practice reviews of management practices.

Tim Pollock – Victoria

Tim coordinates and manages major projects both in Australia and overseas involving the assessment of impact of emissions to air.

His experience in air quality modelling covers the arenas of works approvals and licensing, modelling for EIA and EIS’s, modelling for expert evidence in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), Independent Panel, and Land and Environment Court forums. He focusses on modelling of odour impact from intensive animal husbandry industries such as broiler and egg layer farms, piggeries and cattle feedlots, as well as wastewater treatment plants, rendering plants, abattoirs, waste transfer stations, composting facilities and pulp mills.

Craig has 12 years’ experience in acoustics & vibration engineering and has a Bachelor of Science (Physics) degree from the University of Newcastle.

He has gained extensive experience in environmental noise monitoring & modelling, OH&S noise exposure, mobile plant noise emission testing & control, noise control design as well as weapons noise testing, mechanical equipment vibration testing, whole body vibration (WBV) assessment, blast monitoring & architectural acoustics.

Sonia Holzheimer – Queensland

Sonia is a mechanical engineer with more than 12 years’ experience. Her knowledge in the design of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) plant with specialised acoustic requirements led to the expansion of her abilities into the noise sector early in her career. As a multi-discipline engineer, Sonia has provided a number of successful, cost effective and practical solutions for a range of projects including power generation, water, sewerage and buildings.

Sonia also has extensive experience in noise impact assessments for proposed developments impacted by road, air-traffic and industrial noise.

Betsabe Velasquez

Betsabé is a geography civil engineer close to five years’ experience and a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Planning for Projects. As a project engineer, she has developed environmental impact studies and statements for several projects within the energy and mining industry.

Her recent professional experience includes training in modelling and monitoring techniques in the field of air and noise quality and participating in local and international training courses and seminars.

Benjamin Roa

Benjamin has more than five years’ experience in environmental consulting in the Philippines. He has been involved in the conduct of environmental impact assessment and monitoring studies, compliance and due diligence audits in the energy, water resources, mining, telecommunications and industrial sector. He has relevant experience in project management, air quality management, and ambient air quality monitoring using portable real-time loggers and sampling equipment. He is also currently undergoing training for various modeling software including CALPUFF for air pollution dispersion modeling and CadnaA for acoustic modeling, in order to address the growing demand for specialist modeling services in the Asian region.
