Airport operators, government and local authorities are under increasing pressure to reduce overheads, meet more stringent security and safety guidelines, comply with regulatory requirements and maximise the return on high-value assets. They are also challenged with implementing an environmental policy to reduce noise and emissions.

In addition to enhancing the way assets are managed, a new holistic approach to delivering integrated aviation services is needed to improve operational performance, commercial opportunities and returns to stakeholders. As the global industry evolves in response to economic, environmental and social drivers, it has never been more critical to deliver effective services and achieve maximum benefit on capital investment.

To address these challenges, GHD’s aviation solutions provides services underpinned by integrated transport strategies and aviation business knowledge. Our people combine technical skill with an intimate understanding of the aviation industry to address challenges.

Auckland Airport Northern Winter Schedule Remote Stands

Auckland International Airport Limited required new aircraft stands within a short timeframe, to cater for future demand.

The airport engaged GHD to design two remote International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) aircraft Code E stands to cater for the 2015/2016 northern hemisphere winter schedule. Understanding the time restrictions for completion of the stands into operation, GHD implemented an expedient pavement design for short-term parking and ultimately long-term taxi-lane requirements. This far exceeded client expectations for future-proofing.

Brisbane Airport Runway 01/19 Overlay

Brisbane Airport Corporation required a maintenance resurfacing of runway 01/19 at Brisbane Airport, and engaged GHD to provide design consultancy services and technical advice during the construction phase. Brisbane Airport is one of the busiest single runway airports in the world and construction timeframes are limited, which presented some unique challenges.

There were two stages to the project: the first being the runway ends (resurfaced in 2013) followed by the central portion of the runway (resurfaced in 2016). The second stage of the project also included the relocation of the primary runway aeronautical ground lighting (AGL) infrastructure. The asphalt overlay and associated aeronautical ground lighting upgrade were critical to maintaining safe operations and connectivity globally.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands Aircraft Pavement Refurbishment

The Australian Department of Finance and Deregulation appointed GHD in 2011 to undertake the feasibility, design and construction phase services of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) Aircraft Pavement Refurbishment Project on behalf of the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport.

The airport plays a significant role in the life of the local community. All goods and services delivered to CKI are by either ship or aircraft. These delivery services are dependent on facilities, the weather and limited local resources. During the wet season when the unloading of ships is not possible, the delivery of essential food, supplies and services is dependent on airfreight. The CKI Aircraft Pavement Refurbishment works aimed at extending the life of the aircraft pavement.

nnovative Taxilane Pavement Rehabilitation

GHD was appointed to investigate pavement distress on a Taxilane and provide an innovative pavement design solution that would address the weak subgrade, reduce the disruption to a minimum and provide ease of construction.

The high ground water level and very weak subgrade would be challenging to address within the period. Standard pavement design options were considered but subsequently rejected by the client.

Ohakea Airbase Pilot Training Facility

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) appointed GHD to design and construct a facility to house the specific requirements of Beechcraft flight simulator equipment. This included two fully isolated simulator rooms and accompanying offices, workshops and training classrooms, furnished with high-tech equipment from the United States.

The overall project included the refurbishment and fit-out of the No.1 hangar, the adjacent flight-line aircraft shelter and associated hard-standing, as well as the refurbishment of the flight operations building. The building’s functions all radiate from a centrally located spine, intersected by the entry corridor that leads to the No.1 hangar through an internal link-way.
