Delaware Aqueduct Tap Membrane Filtration Plant

image

The Town of Newburgh owns and operates two sources of drinking water supply to serve its approximately 23,000 customers in its Consolidated Water District, as well as the Town of Marlborough. The two sources are the Delaware Aqueduct Tap (DAT), which is a connection to the New York City Delaware Aqueduct and the Chadwick Lake Reservoir, which is a manmade reservoir in the Town.

Until recently, the Town had been granted a filtration waiver from the Surface Water Treatment Rule by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) for its Delaware Aqueduct supply. Due to recent increases in disinfection byproducts, specifically haloacetic acids, the Town exceeded the maximum contaminant level under the Stage 1 Disinfection Byproduct Rule. Accordingly, the NYSDOH rescinded the filtration waiver. The Town retained GHD to evaluate filtration alternatives for the DAT and to prepare the design of the required facilities.

A unique shading system that shields the sun whilst allowing daylight penetration has the potential to radically cut air-conditioning and lighting use in buildings.
