Hydrogeology

Hydrogeology is an integral component of many mining, construction and environmental projects. GHD has local, national and international hydrogeological experience having completed a large number of projects including groundwater resource assessment, mine dewatering, aquifer depressurisation, groundwater management and environmental assessment, salinity, acid sulfate soils (ASS) and acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). In all projects the GHD focus is to provide cost-efficient and innovative solutions to assist our clients to make the right decisions.

GHD services include:

  • Groundwater exploration, resource assessment and development
  • Borefield design and installation
  • Groundwater resource and borefield management
  • Dewatering investigations
  • Water management plans
  • Salinity assessment, management and remediation
  • Contaminated site assessment and remediation
  • Geophysical investigations
  • Environmental impact assessments and management plans
  • Environmental water requirements
  • Environmental auditing and environmental performance reporting
  • Numerical modelling
  • Aquifer storage and recovery, artificial recharge and wastewater reuse
  • Acid and metaliferous drainage (AMD) assessment and management
  • Acid sulfate soil assesment and management

Hydrogeologists at GHD work with other GHD professionals involved in engineering, environment, planning, surveying and GIS for integrated solutions.

Anglesea Borefield Water Supply Project, Victoria

image

Groundwater contained within the Lower Eastern View Formation (LEVF) aquifer system in the Anglesea area has been identified in the Central Region Sustainable Water Strategy as a potential option to augment the Greater Geelong urban water supply.

GHD was engaged to assess the groundwater resources and the potential environmental impacts and sustainability of the extraction of up to 7000 Ml/year of groundwater.

Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Feasibility Study, Murrumbidgee Region

image

Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) is a process where water is added to aquifers via injection wells or surface water storages, and then extracted when required.

GHD carried out a feasibility study to assess the potential of ASR to halt or reverse falling groundwater levels and to increase groundwater available for irrigation and environmental flows in the Murrumbidgee region of New South Wales.

Estimation of Groundwater Environmental Water Reserves for Aquifers and Aquifer Systems, Victoria

image

As a consequence of Council of Australian Government (COAG) reforms the Victorian state government committed to establishing environmental water reserves for aquifers in Victoria, which take into account the need to protect the integrity of the aquifer and the needs of groundwater dependent ecosystems.

GHD investigated current and alternative approaches to determining environmental water reserves for aquifers in Victoria for the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the National Water Initiative.

Mine Groundwater Management, Latrobe Valley, Victoria

image

Loy Yang Mine is a dedicated open cut coal mine in Victoria, which excavates more than 30 megatonnes of brown coal per year to supply power stations and industry.

GHD has developed numerical groundwater flow models of the mine that were used to assist in the medium and long-term planning of aquifer depressurisation, to test the impact of different aquifer depressurisation strategies and to determine aquifer pressure requirements to maintain mine stability.

The Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor

image

The Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor is the first large-scale integrated road and rail project for South East Queensland.

The purpose of the AUD1.5 billion project is to improve road, rail and public transport links between Darra and Springfield to service the growing population centres along the corridor and will be built in two stages.
