Industrial Water & Waste Management

GHD has extensive and practical experience in assessing and managing water and waste in industrial applications. We bring together teams that can provide design solutions and operational services for all industrial water and waste processes across the full spectrum of services (process, chemistry, hydraulics, mechanical equipment, instrumentation and control, materials handling, plant layout and risk assessment).

In many cases, water and waste management are base costs that can determine the viability of an industry. GHD has significant experience in identifying issues through the process cycle that will contribute to the environmental, social and economic bottom lines of a business. We can assist operational sites to develop site-specific solutions and identify the most appropriate technologies to improve process and waste management. We cover a wide range of industry sectors:

  • Agriculture and aquaculture
  • Beverages and wineries
  • Chemicals and petrochemicals
  • Dairy
  • Food processing
  • Meat processing
  • Metals and mining
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Power generation
  • Pulp and paper
  • Tanneries
  • Textiles

Biodiesel Wastewater Treatment

image

Biodiesel Producers Ltd engaged GHD to prepare a concept and detailed design for a wastewater treatment plant. The plant will treat wastewater from the biodiesel plant and adjacent rendering plant, at a new tallow based biodiesel production facility located at Barnawartha near Wodonga, Victoria.

The wastewater treatment plant is based on a covered anaerobic lagoon and activated sludge plant (sequencing batch reactor).

GHD formed an alliance with John Young Kelvin to fast track a AUD$1 million wastewater treatment plant upgrade to enable catering for treatment of increased volume of wastewater and improved effluent treatment for sewer discharge and reuse.

The project included a new balance tank, screen, nutrient dosing system, additional aeration for biological oxidation, UV disinfection and recycling system, dewatering system with a filter belt press and outloading.  The optimisation of the plant included modification to the existing operating strategy for pH adjustment, dissolved air floatation delivery, and bioreactors aeration and decanting.
