Plant Engineering

Plant engineering is the function responsible for planning, designing, specifying, installing, modifying and maintaining plant facilities, systems and equipment.

Our Plant Engineering team incorporates engineers experienced in the design and maintenance of industrial processing plants.

Our primary customer groups are those who are in the business of processing, refining, handling, manufacturing or treating petrochemicals, gases, water, waste, bulk materials, minerals, food products or manufactured products for use in other processes or for sale to others.

Are you looking to either expand your business, increase production, reduce bottlenecks, manufacture new products, improve efficiency, upgrade to new technologies, refurbish or repair? Our offering ranges from machine engineering and finite element analysis to fully integrated, multi-discipline industrial plant design.

  • Mechanical plant specification and detailed design
  • Plant operation and control system design
  • Pressure vessel and piping design, specification and stress analysis
  • Fluid pumping, handling and storage equipment design and specification
  • Computational fluid dynamic modelling
  • Power drive and transmission specification and selection

We utilise the latest 3D modelling software for each phase of project design development, from conceptual to definitive design, right through to the production of documentation for construction. We’ll customise our delivery to suit your project development strategy - we are accustomed to roles in a wide range of contractual relationships including: due diligence, design consultancy, independent inspection, EPCM, EPC, D&C, owner’s engineer, and strategic alliances.

Black Start Turbine Generator for Eraring Power Station

image

A ‘Black Start’ is the complex process of restoring power supply without external power, following total failure of the power grid.

GHD used its international network to source and confirm a suitable generator to provide 'Black Start' capability to Eraring Power Station. From previous experience with second hand gas turbine projects, we were able to use our internal resources in Newcastle, Perth and the UK to select a suitably sized and priced gas turbine coupled with a new 'oversized' generator for the demanding starting loads. The gas turbine was refurbished in Dubai, and we provided on-site quality inspections of the new generator, which was sourced in the UK.

North Queensland Gas Pipeline

image

The North Queensland Gas Pipeline (NQGP) is a 392 km gas pipeline and 10 MW compression facility that transports coal seam gas (CSG) from Moranbah in Central Queensland to Townsville.

It has made gas available to North Queensland for the first time. The pipeline provides a strategic link between the vast gas reserves of Queensland’s Bowen Basin coalfields and the rapidly growing economy of North Queensland.

Pinjarra Alumina Refinery

image

Two new 140 MW gas-fired cogeneration units in Western Australia were the latest projects delivered through GHD’s long relationship with leading energy infrastructure company Alinta Pty Ltd.

The cogeneration plants deliver more than 75 percent energy efficiency, compared with 25-50 percent for other power plants operating in Western Australia. The recently completed cogeneration units are located within Alcoa’s Pinjarra Alumina refinery in the South West of Western Australia. The combined output of the units is 280 MW of power and up to 840tph of steam.

Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun

image

Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun provides smelter grade alumina to Australia, New Zealand and export markets. The Yarwun Refinery is about 10km northwest of Gladstone, Central Queensland, with its Residue Management Area (RMA) approximately 10km west of the refinery.

GHD has been involved on this project since the site selection and design phase, when our Tailings group undertook the site study and detailed design for the RMA, including an extensive geotechnical mapping program and installation of a groundwater monitoring network.

The Adaro Overland Conveyor

image

GHD’s role was to develop design criteria, preliminary design and contract documentation as well as define interface data sufficient for the calling of tenders for the construction of a 64km long PT Adaro overland conveyer.

This phase concluded with assistance in selecting the preferred tenderer as well as finalisation of technical documentation, which formed the technical component of the contract for the works. GHD was also commissioned to undertake the preliminary design of a new dumping station and port loading facility.

X41 Meter Station, Queensland

image

The X41 Lateral and Meter Station were commissioned in June 2007.

The facilities are comprised of a hot tap connection supplying a DN 150 inlet pipeline, a dry gas filter unit, series water bath heaters, pressure regulation / meter station facilities and a DN 300 outlet pipeline adjacent to the Xstrata X41 Power Station site which supplies fuel gas to the 30 MW Xstrata Power Station.
