GHD has received four Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards,
including the Spatial Industry’s highest recognition for
achievement at the WALIS International Forum in Perth on
12th November, 2009. These are the only awards for the
Asia-Pacific region that recognise, at the same event, the
excellent achievements of both individuals and organisations
engaged in the spatial information industry across the region.
The projects for which GHD has received awards
include:
New Perth Bunbury Highway Development
Project
Now known as the Kwinana Freeway extension and Forrest
Highway, Western Australia’s largest road infrastructure
development was opened to traffic on the 20 September 2009, some
three months ahead of schedule. The spatial industry conferred the
highest recognition for industry achievement to Insight Survey,
Leighton Contractors, WA Limestone, GHD and Main Roads for this
project, which used 3D machine guidance to direct control of work
output. It won the Infrastructure and Construction category and the
JK Barrie Award for Overall Excellence.
South East Queensland Koala Habitat Assessment
and Mapping
The purpose of the SEQ Koala Habitat map is to guide
future development planning in SEQ and to initiate a new statutory
approach to koala conservation. The project involved the analysis
of satellite imagery to identify land cover strata, the development
of a habitat model, field verification of habitat value mapping of
approximately 14000 trees and approximately 500 sites and
preparation of a final koala habitat map based on the results and
connectivity to surrounding bushland. GHD and the Department of
Environment and Resource Management in Queensland won the
Environment Sustainability award for this project.
Blue Bridge Rail Overpass – 3D Laser
Scanning
Blue Bridge rail overpass in Elaine is a
Heritage-listed bridge of significance to Victoria. Maintenance
inspections of the bridge carrying the Geelong to Ballarat rail
line discovered serious cracking and spalling of the bridge arch
stones and an investigation was carried out to determine the
suitability for continuing use of the bridge. Load testing of
bridge demonstrated that there was unsafe movement of the arch.
Survey 21 and GHD won the Land Titling and Development category for
the use of 3D laser scanning to support the monitoring and repair
process.
