Dams

GHD is an active and experienced services provider in dams engineering.

GHD has been providing innovative, safe and optimised solutions for large and small-scale dams since 1930. We have been involved in the construction of more than 60 large dams — many of these in recent times.

Dams engineering requires understanding and control of the enormous forces and potential energy of water.  From foundation and seismic assessments through to geotechnical, hydrological, hydraulic and structural design — projects demand specialist skills and a coordinated approach.

GHD has developed insight and understanding of the complex and critical issues relating to individual dam locations and environments. As a result, we deliver reliable advice, tailored designs and successful outcomes. We back this up with specialist software and design aids, the latest technology and access to international databases.

We can assist clients in project identification, surveying, site investigations, construction, planning, programming, documentation, cost estimations, risk and safety management/reviews, surveillance, valuations, and preparation of Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) or Operation and Maintenance manuals (O&M manuals)

GHD is a member of the International Commission of Large Dams (ICOLD) and the Australian National Committee on large Dams (ANCOLD). In Australia, GHD has won awards for excellence for projects such as Copperfield Dam, the Hunter Valley Coal Mine slurry trench cut-off, the Wurdee Boluc Reservoir enlargement and Julius Dam.

Richard Frost has 30 years' experience, almost entirely related to dams and dam structures, but including canals, pumpstations and pipelines. He joined GHD in 2000, and is currently the New South Wales manager and company Service Line Leader for dams. Prior to this he was managing director of a consulting practice specialising in dams engineering in Africa. He has broad experience in dams, covering hydrology, hydraulics, geotechnology and structures. This has mainly been associated with embankment dams but has included several arch, arch buttress and gravity dams. Richard has been involved in all aspects of dam engineering, including project identification and planning, site investigations, detailed design, on-site supervision and project management, dam safety surveillance and rehabilitation.

Richard has been responsible for a design office that has carried out over 400 feasibility studies and 220 detailed designs on new dams, typically in the 15-45m height range, and was a project director for a number of major dam and water transfer projects with embankment volumes up to 3.5 million m3 and capacities up to 350Gl.
