Pavement Engineering

The roads industry worldwide is seeking organisations that are customer focused and capable across a range of services. GHD provides a diverse portfolio of services for pavement engineering including specialist whole of life analysis options to optimize the life of the pavement and minimise the overall cost of the maintenance during the operational life of the asset.

The single most valuable asset to a road owner is arguably the pavement system within the network. GHD understands that pavements are subjected to static and dynamic loads as well as exposure to the elements, so only sound engineering judgment, made by experienced and qualified staff, can provide cost–effective and appropriate solutions to pavement engineering challenges.

One of GHD’s key strengths is our innovative approach to sustainable pavement design. This has been achieved by our close ties with research centres of excellence at Delft (Holland) Wisconsin (USA) Stellenbosch (South Africa) Transit New Zealand UWA (Western Australia) and ARRB (Australia).

Pavement Engineering is part of GHD’s core business of providing transportation infrastructure. The Pavement Engineering Service Line undertakes investigation, analysis design and documentation services for the construction, rehabilitation and strengthening of pavements. Our services cover pavements for local roads, major freeways, highways, airport runways, mine access, heavy industrial and haul roads.

Gahans Road – Bargara Road Intersection Project

image

The upgrade of the intersection of Gahans Road and Bargara Road in Bundaberg, Queensland presented a challenge to overcome merging traffic issues. The design needed to incorporate the upgrade of a nearby street intersection and a cane train crossing.

Working for the Department of Main Roads on the intersection upgrade, GHD took into account traffic merging from a number of side streets into a major arterial road. The design allowed for an additional ‘fourth leg’ for traffic from the proposed Bundaberg Ring Road and the existing cane railway crossing.
