The Brighton Bypass Projects are being undertaken for the Tasmanian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER) and involve upgrading of the Midland Highway to the north of Hobart.  This includes the provision of an upgraded link between the East Derwent Highway at Bridgewater and the existing highway north of Pontville. The Brighton Bypass has been split into two sections, of which GHD is responsible for the design of the Northern Section project.

The Northern Section includes 4.8 km of new dual carriageway and 1.3 km of new two lane, two way highway, and includes a major interchange at Tea Tree Road and a roundabout at the existing Midland Highway. Structural works include a major new bridge over the Jordan River and smaller bridges over the Bagdad Rivulet and the Strathallan Rivulet a well as the structures associated with the interchange.

The Bundaberg Ring Road is the biggest single investment a state government has ever made in the Bundaberg area.

When built, the Ring Road will provide motorists with an alternative route around Bundaberg, ease congestion on inner city streets and reduce travel time from the Isis Highway to the eastern suburbs.

GHD provided civil engineering services for the renovation of an existing warehouse in Auburn, Washington. The warehouse was renovated so the Social Security Administration could provide a call centre to account for the upcoming increase of retirees in the national workforce.

Civil engineering services included grading, paving, storm drainage and utility design for the site.

GHD Newcastle undertook the concept and detailed design and documentation for the Charlestown Bypass near Newcastle, as well as providing environmental, geotechnical investigation and traffic assessment services.

Representing a major road infrastructure improvement for Newcastle, the project involved designing a 6 km section of highway as part of the city’s inner city bypass. GHD designed a four-lane divided carriageway with three grade-separated intersections, six road bridges and a pedestrian bridge.

GHD have been commissioned to design and construct bus priority lanes in the Christchurch CBD in order to alleviate the escalating congestion problem.      

GHD is in the initial design stage for the first of three bus priority lanes, along the Columbo Street corridor. The project involves the widening of this main arterial allowing for dedicated and on-peak-only bus lanes for travel into and away from the CBD. The lanes will extend for approximately 3.5 kilometres. Other design features include bus stop relocation, B-signals, PTIPS, cycle lanes and changes to roadside parking allowances.

As part of the AusLink program, GHD is working with DOTARS to undertake three transport studies - the Adelaide to Darwin, Melbourne to Brisbane and Sydney to Brisbane corridor studies. These studies involve a description of the existing transport infrastructure, current freight and passenger volumes for all transport modes, demand analysis to forecast volumes to 2030 and an infrastructure efficiency analysis. GHD is also developing strategies and investment priorities for DOTARS so that existing infrastructure is upgraded to meet forecast volumes.

The Bowen Basin mining boom in central Queensland is generating high demand for new industrial premises for mining services and supporting industries. This growth is boosting the expansion of the Paget Industrial hub, to the south of the Mackay city centre.

GHD has been engaged by the Mackay Regional Council to provide the civil infrastructure design for a new 70ha, 100-lot fully serviced development in Paget, on the site of a former sugar cane and turf farm.

The upgrade of the intersection of Gahans Road and Bargara Road in Bundaberg, Queensland presented a challenge to overcome merging traffic issues. The design needed to incorporate the upgrade of a nearby street intersection and a cane train crossing.

Working for the Department of Main Roads on the intersection upgrade, GHD took into account traffic merging from a number of side streets into a major arterial road. The design allowed for an additional ‘fourth leg’ for traffic from the proposed Bundaberg Ring Road and the existing cane railway crossing.

Highbrook Business Park in New Zealand is nearing completion after a twelve-year involvement by GHD.

GHD was part of a team of international designers who developed the concept for the 190ha Highbrook Business Park, adjacent to Auckland’s Southern Motorway. Highbrook Business Park has attracted tenants from a wide range of businesses and will eventually accommodate up to 12,000 employees in 550,000sq m of industrial and commercial floor space.

GHD was engaged by the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) to quantify the biodiversity debits and offsets arising from vegetation clearing for the Hume Highway duplication, between Tarcutta and Mullengandra.

The environmental assessment for the project was undertaken under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act (1979). Under the Property Vegetation Plan (PVP) process, clearing of native vegetation at one site can be offset by condition improvements in native vegetation at another site. The purpose of this balancing process is to maintain or improve  environmental outcomes across the landscape, where clearing of low condition native vegetation is balanced by improvement of vegetation condition elsewhere. Therefore, the quality of vegetation in the landscape is maintained.

GHD has provided an innovative roading solution which seeks to protect irreplaceable national heritage sites the Kerikeri Mission House and Stone Store from flooding and traffic vibration damage.

The design saw not only the removal of the old river crossing in favour of a new pedestrian bridge but also construction of a 1.6 kilometre vehicle bypass over an alternate stretch of the Kerikeri waterway.

Building on its established track record of providing successful projects for the Gladstone Regional Council, GHD has been engaged to assist with the implementation of its Kirkwood Road Structure Plan for the southwest section of the city.

The plan was produced in 2004 and caters for a population increase of more than 5,000 people, and presents a blueprint for the future of an important part of the city. It includes the construction of Kirkwood Road from Dawson Highway to Gladstone/Benaraby Road, providing a number of new traffic routes from the area.

RoseWater GHD provided plans and design of drainage, grading, paving, utilities, and temporary erosion and sediment control (TESC); and construction observation and support for a new
193,000 square feet high school in Auburn, Washington.

The development on the 40-acre site consists of buildings, paved pedestrian areas, parking lots (providing a total of 650 spaces), a bus drop-off area, four ball fields, a soccer/football track and field, and seven tennis courts.

GHD is helping the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) to improve road safety and reduce travel times on the Pacific Highway through its extensive input into the Woolgoolga to Wells Crossing and Oxley Highway to Kempsey projects.

GHD's scope of work included route option investigation, route selection concept design and extensive community consultation. An environmental impact study also looked at route selection to minimise impacts on sensitive environmental areas (endangered ecological communities, protected wetlands, national parks and nature reserves).

The Southern Gateway Alliance, comprising GHD, Leighton Contractors and WA Limestone in partnership with Main Roads Western Australia, was awarded the contract to build the AUD11 million new Perth to Bunbury Highway.

In a good demonstration of public authority and private industry cooperation, the Red Hill Road Bridge was successfully launched on 3 January 2007 by the project team of Wagga Wagga City Council (WWCC), GHD, Nelmac Pty Ltd and Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC).

The overall purpose of the rail bridge project was to link Red Hill Rd to the Olympic Highway.  Red Hill Rd is an arterial orbital road that traverses the south end of Wagga Wagga, generally in an east-west direction.  It ended at the south side of the Main Southern Rail Line but it was desired to extend the road underneath the rail line through to the adjacent Olympic Highway.

RoseWater GHD prepared utility, drainage and temporary erosion/sediment control designs for the five-mile long D755 segment of Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail project in Tukwila, Washington.

Services were provided for the construction bid documents and included drawings, specifications, Drainage Design Report, Utility Design Report, and quantity estimate. The project included aerial and at-grade sections of guideway, street improvements and parking lot redevelopment for a new station.

The AUD$62 million Waiouru Interchange project represents a significant link in Auckland’s transport network. Manukau City Council and Transit New Zealand commissioned GHD as design consultant and then construction contract administrator on the project.

Key features of the project include two grade separated interchanges, the widening of more than two kilometres of motorway, the construction of local arterial roading as well as a large roundabout and a 200-metre long bridge. This challenging project required carefulcoordination to avoid interference with an adjacent power station cooling pond.

In a joint initiative, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and the Otago Regional Council (ORC) commissioned GHD to carry out a comprehensive study which would inform future transportation decisions in Queenstown.

The solutions researched and developed focused on Travel Demand Management (TDM) and maximising the public transport services in the district. Since the completion of the study, GHD has been assisting stakeholders in implementing the recommended strategy.

GHD was engaged by Blue Circle Southern Cement (BCSC) in Waurn Ponds, Victoria to project manage the grade separation of a quarry haul road and the Geelong-Warrnambool Rail Line.

When completed, the project will improve the efficiency and safety of access by quarry vehicles between limestone deposits that are currently traversed and separated by the rail line.
