Harrogate Audi Car Dealership, Knaresborough (Yorkshire, UK)

Harrogate Audi Car Dealership

GHD was engaged to undertake civil and structural design for a new dealership comprising showroom, offices and full workshop with a separate car wash building. The design of the main superstructure, in accordance with Audi corporate guidelines/standards, consisted of a full height curtain wall to showroom elevations and curved cellular roof beams at roof level. The foundation design is a thickened edge raft with thickenings under columns on ‘vibro improved’ sands and gravels. GHD also designed the external hardstanding, retaining walls, and foul and surface water drainage systems (including attenuation).

Bretton Hall Redevelopment, Wakefield (Yorkshire, UK)

Bretton Hall Redevelopment

GHD civil and structural teams carried out design work on this £15m project to transform a Grade II-listed Georgian mansion and ancillary buildings, in the grounds of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, into a luxury 120-bed hotel and spa with restaurants, conference room and wedding facilities. Previously used by Leeds University as their Performing Arts College, conversion and restoration of the 18th century building has involved working closely with local authority conservation officers and English Heritage.

DS Smith Packaging, Fordham (Cambridgeshire, UK)

Project Genesis

GHD undertook civil and structural engineering design and project management services for this £10m production facility and headquarter. Production facilities comprised 60m span cellular beam portals, supporting the aluminium standing seam roof with a high percentage of roof lights (little electrical lighting during summer months). GHD carried out extensive external works remodelling on a sloping site. We specified lime stabilisation techniques to prepare the clay and chalk subsoil, and a surface water attenuation system using a pond with restricted outlet.

Hatfield Station Redevelopment (Hertfordshire, UK)

Hatfield Station Redevelopment

GHD was engaged as lead design consultant from GRIP 4 (Single Option Development) to GRIP 8 (Closeout) for 340m2 of new station buildings with improved retail units and a 378 space multi-storey car park to replace the existing facility. The design overcame a number of site constraints including proximity to the electrified railway, a narrow site that created pinch points, and a high throughput of pedestrians, taxis, cyclists and buses. The design has maintained local heritage by incorporating motifs from the grand entrance gate to Hatfield House across the road from the station. In the British Parking Awards the project was a finalist in the Best New Car Park category.

Latitude Red, Leeds (Yorkshire, UK)

Latitude Red

A major new city centre development situated within the West End district of Leeds offering 122,000ft² of new Grade A office accommodation and a dynamic mix of office, residential, leisure and retail space. The eight storey development included sustainable solutions such as rainwater harvesting, highly efficient lighting and energy efficient heating and cooling plant, the use of sustainable materials and hard landscaping which led to the development achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.

Innovation Hub, Leeds (Yorkshire, UK)

Leeds University Hub

GHD was engaged by Leeds University to design this new four storey main building with a feature curved frame four storey block to the rear. The two buildings link together with walkways at each floor and a glazed atrium. The curved gable facades to the link block structural steel required quite intricate detailing.

Majestic Cinema Emergency Response, Leeds (Yorkshire, UK)

Majestic Leeds

When fire severely damaged a 1920’s Grade II listed iconic building in Leeds city centre, GHD was engaged immediately to carry out project management and contract administration duties associated with the emergency response and making safe works. We led coordination/liaison with the client, contractors, subcontractors, local authority, fire and rescue and police, which led to the building being made safe, stable and ultimately saved for re-development. We implemented and administrated contracts for facade retention, roof demolition and strip out, and temporary roof works.

Milliners Wharf Phase 2 (The Hat Box), Ancoats (Manchester, UK)

Millners Wharf

GHD was engaged on this new £30m development for 144 one, two, duplex and three-bedroom apartments across two contemporary, new eight and nine storey buildings. With a sky garden and a separate 316m² retail unit. The site, formerly mills, housing and canal wharf, required remediation for removal of hot-spots and shallow obstructions from past land use. Design included a large, concrete framed, landscaped deck next to the new residential blocks with car parking underneath.

North Bay Water Park, Scarborough (Yorkshire, UK)

Scarborough Water Park

Part of the £150m Sands development, this £15m water park has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, waterslides, spa and parking. GHD was appointed as civil and structural engineer, with our scope covering steelwork, foundations and reinforced concrete for the signature ‘wave pool’ and associated basement plant room, ‘infinity pool’ and ‘outdoor garden’ pool. The team also designed external areas and associated foul and surface water drainage, including a new surface water beach outfall for adoption by Yorkshire Water.

HML Gateway House, Skipton (Yorkshire, UK)

HML Offices Skipton

GHD was engaged to design this three story office development on a 100,000ft² greenfield site, built using natural stone to ensure continuity with the surrounding area. Now home to 850 staff from Skipton Building Society’s subsidiary HML, the structure is a braced steel frame with an Omnia compositely designed floor to provide thermal mass cooling from the exposed concrete soffit.

The Pipeworks, Swadlincote (Derbyshire, UK)

The Pipeworks, Swadlincote

GHD designed this challenging £9.6m project to sympathetically integrate modern retail warehousing and a new Wm Morrison supermarket into an adjacent conservation area. GHD carried out civil and structural design for a 74,000ft2 supermarket, 70,000ft² of A1 retail warehousing, a five screen cinema, and 12,000ft² of A3 restaurant accommodation. Design had to take account of mine workings - a number of shafts were discovered, treated and capped during the works - and incorporated refurbishment of heritage buildings within the conservation area.

New Dacorum Campus, Hemel Hempstead (Hertfordshire, UK)

Dacorum Campus

GHD was engaged by West Herts College for civil and structural engineering services on Phase 1 of this college redevelopment project. Our design has catered for demolition of the existing college buildings, site enabling works and construction works in a live education environment. Design had to consider complex phasing and decant programming issues. Our team has worked closely with key project stakeholders including the Environment Agency and Affinity Water to overcome sensitive environmental issues in connection with a local river diversion and an underlying aquifer.
