Railway Design and Assurance

Share on:

As we continue to experience a change in global populations, urbanisation, and the need for sustainable and cost effective transport solutions, is becoming increasingly important.

GHD’s Design and Assurance team provide a full range of services to achieve sustainable and cost effective transport solutions. These are delivered by engineers and designers who are passionate and experienced in all aspects of railway engineering.

Railway Design Overview

GHD offers a comprehensive range of railway infrastructure design services that are delivered by our multidisciplinary UK engineering team and supported by a global network of rail designers, engineers and operational analyst’s.

These services cover the complete lifecycle of railway infrastructure projects from concept and feasibility assessment, planning and funding development, to outline, detailed & construction design for railway engineering projects. We work with governmental departments, infrastructure owners, train operating companies, developers, local authorities and contractors to deliver solutions that are technically assured, constructible, maintainable and safe to implement and operate.

Our projects are delivered by multidisciplinary teams of people tailored to each project and scope. These people are engineers with experience in track, civil engineering, geotechnical, signalling, electrification, plant and telecommunications systems. Not only do our engineers have experience in design, but they also understand contracting and implementation within the build environment and operational railway.

GHD also have the capability to fulfil the ancillary elements of design including project risk analysis, safety in design, and hazard identification. Engineering design is complemented by our global team who provide services in timetable modelling, urban design, large structures (tunnelling and bridge design), architecture & buildings, environmental assessments, planning and stakeholder engagement.

Design Services

  • Scheme Development / Feasibility – Integrated engineering outline design; line speed improvements and infrastructure upgrades; new stations and routes
  • Capacity Enhancement / Planning – Multidisciplinary route capacity studies and enhancement schemes; rationalising, reconfiguring  and remodelling designs
  • Track & Permanent Way design – Design of track arrangement and alignment for junction enhancements; line speed (run time) improvement; gauging
  • Electrification – traction power and contact system design for reconfigured and upgraded infrastructure
  • Stations and Concourse Design – multidisciplinary design of accessible platforms that comply with the Disability Discrimination Act; passenger information, pedestrian flow and associated equipment & facilities
  • Depots And Facilities - Multidisciplinary design for rail depots, sidings and facilities including access logistics and concept of operations, rail system infrastructure, buildings and plant requirements
  • Tender Design and Estimating support - Evaluation of physical project measurement through tender design or review, Bills of Quantities and associated estimating support
  • Safety in Design -CDM compliance; hazard identification & documentation.

Railway Assurance Overview

GHD offer Engineering Assurance services to clients, asset owners and stakeholders for a discrete portfolio of projects.

GHD Engineering Assurance can act on behalf of infrastructure owners and maintainers to provide Engineering Assurance including: safety by design; value engineering and whole-life-cost criteria satisfaction; risk assessment; and hazard mitigation contributing to the Common Safety Method (CSM).  Our appointed engineers can also participate in scope definition; option selection of proposals; undertake acceptance of designs following Interdisciplinary Design Review (IDR); and review designs to confirm they meet remit and standards required by the client.

Assurance Services

  • Hazard & Risk management -  specialists in employing Common Safety Method approach
  • Engineering Assurance roles -  multidisciplinary integration of designs and single discipline review
  • Project Risk assessment and management
  • Client or Owners Engineer roles
  • Engineering studies and investigation technical support

Isle of Man Railways - Snaefell Mountain Railway Track Renewals

image

GHD provided design and programme management services for the Snaefell Mountain Railway track renewal programme. Opened in 1895, the Snaefell Mountain Railway (SMR) carries passengers in vintage trams between Laxey, a coastal town, and Snaefell’s summit, 2,036 feet above sea level. The five mile long double-track line is 3 ft 6 in gauge and uses a Fell Incline Railway System center rail for braking on the steep gradients, some of which exceed 1 in 12. Its overhead wires supply 550 V direct current.

In 2010 the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure, the railway’s operator, appointed GHD to design and programme manage the SMR’s three year track renewal programme, following on from the Manx Electric Railway’s seven year track renewals programme, also managed by GHD.

Manchester Metrolink - City Centre Track Renewals

GHD worked as part of the Metrolink team on strategic planning of tram track renewal. After 15 years of operation, much of Metrolink’s city center track was nearing the end of its economic life and was programmed for replacement. The main objectives were to ensure the long term operation of City Centre tram services with minimal risk of derailment and with improved ability to maintain worn rail.

Working as an integrated part of the Metrolink team, GHD was responsible for the overall strategic planning of the renewals, including specification of the design requirements and of the fabrication and installation contract.

Transport Initiatives Edinburgh Tram Design & Delivery Programme Assurance Support

Transport Initiatives Edinburgh (tie) Tram Design & Delivery Programme Assurance Support appointed GHD to assist in the assurance of the design and delivery of the trams being procured for the new Edinburgh tram network.

Modern trams are complex and sophisticated vehicles. They incorporate many systems and components that have to comply with a wide range of specifications, regulations and legislative requirements, as well as being fully compatible with each other and with the specific characteristics of the fixed infrastructure. Assurance of the design and delivery process required GHD's extensive and detailed knowledge of all these factors, helping to avoid delays and additional cost.

East London Line Phase 2

Ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games, GHD helped deliver a new branch of the East London Railway.

ELLP Phase 2 included construction of a new connection with Network Rail’s (NR) South London Railway near Old Kent Road and works at Clapham Junction to create a terminus platform. The overall Phase 2 objective was to complete the London Overground orbital railway.
