A fundamental project issue is how to ensure that the systems implemented within a project fulfil the initial business requirement. Systems engineering encompasses a range of practices that help to achieve the original project specification.

Our systems engineering team has wide-ranging experience working on complex projects. They are ideally placed to help clients in implementing their projects, through the employment of holistic management and engineering processes throughout the system lifecycle, from the conceptual stage through specification, design development, implementation, testing & commissioning, handover and into operation.

Services

GHD's Systems Engineering services encompass:

  • Requirements definition and management
    • Taking the defined objective for the system (high level requirement) and capturing the essential requirements, so that the client’s needs are understood and can be met
    • Managing the requirements throughout the system lifecycle, to demonstrate that the system delivery fulfils the requirements
  • Architectural Development
    • Representing the architectural design of a system (or system of systems) to enable it to be visualised at a functional block level, facilitating the understanding of how the system or systems fit together and enabling the development of sound interface management tools
  • Interface Management
    • Development of Interface Matrices to facilitate the analysis of system block interactions to enable agreement of key dependencies and interfaces between systems
    • Once the interface matrix is understood and agreed, interface management tools are developed to enable the management of the interface resolution process.
  • Verification and Validation
    • Verification activities to check that the performance of the system(s) fulfil (or will fulfil) the requirements set out, though a combination of modelling, inspection, testing and commissioning and certification.
    • Validation to demonstrate that the system implemented does what it was originally intended to do in its operational environment.
  • Reliability, Availability and Maintainability analysis,
    • Analysis of the performance of a system to confirm it can deliver and sustain its required performance and can be effectively maintained to continue delivering that performance on an ongoing basis.
  • Safety
    • Leadership or support in key areas of safety assurance, risk management and safety case development and delivery.

  • Human Factors studies, considering the working environment and the impact it has on the users of systems.
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility, dealing with the electromagnetic interactions between systems and their environment.

Manchester Metrolink - Systems integration of extensions and improvements

Investment in Manchester Metrolink will bring substantial improvement in the existing infrastructure through a System Enhancement Program and through network extensions under Phase 3a and 3b. GHD is taking a leadership role in the systems engineering and integration that will enable the entire system to operate effectively. Mapping the scope and architecture of the extensions and improvements onto existing system architecture allows the interfaces to be understood and managed.

One key enhancement is the introduction of a new Line of Sight (LoS) signalling system across both the existing and extended sections of the network. This creates interface challenges between the LoS signalling contractor, the existing operator/maintainer and the Phase 3a and 3b infrastructure contractors. GHD is helping to manage these so that safety and acceptable service levels are maintained during construction and so the system operates efficiently as an integrated whole when completed.

Contactor’s Engineering Manager Role London Bridge Redevelopment

GHD is the Contractor's Engineering Manager (CEM) for the Principal Contractor delivering a transformation of the London Bridge station. Network Rail (NR) is transforming London Bridge, the UK’s fourth busiest station. The current 9 terminating and 6 through platforms will become 6 terminating and 9 through platforms, allowing large increases in train capacity, particularly Thameslink services. Station passenger capacity will be increased by two thirds.

Each design team discipline appoints a nominated Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE), responsible for signing off the designs for their discipline and company. As NR’s Principal Contractor, Costain appointed GHD as Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM), managing all the CRE's.

London Underground – S7 and S8 - Programme Delivery Engineering

GHD played a key role in the London Underground’s (LU) largest ever upgrade, that of its Metropolitan, District, Hammersmith & City, and Circle lines.

The upgrade included a fleet of new ‘S Stock’ trains and the infrastructure enabling works for these longer trains, incorporating signalling /immunisation works, platform extensions and the upgrade of station systems, depots and sidings.
