Richard has considerable experience in technical due diligence across these sectors and leads GHD’s Technical Due Diligence Review Group. Richard has held senior roles in the private and public sector, is a member of Infrastructure Australia’s Regulatory and Energy Working Groups and the Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering’s Professional Performance Innovation and Risk Project.

Tasmanian Operational Frequency Standard Change,

GHD engineered and managed the dismantling of California’s first commercial nuclear reactor, shut down in the 1970s, and orchestrated removal of hazardous materials from the site.

Weed Beach Park Master Planning, Darien, Connecticut USA

Weed Beach is an extraordinarily valuable asset to the Town of Darien. Located along the Connecticut shoreline of Long Island Sound, this park offers both active and passive recreational activities.

In May 2005, the Town of Darien Parks & Recreation Commission retained GHD to prepare a Master Plan for Weed Beach Park. The Master Plan was for the upgrade and expansion of an existing, heavily used, 22± acre park facility that contains a public beach, light craft launch area, picnic area, tennis courts, paddle tennis courts, children's play area, a number of buildings, 250± parking spaces and undeveloped woods. GHD services for this project included participation in public meetings, public outreach, park design and implementation phase assistance.

Electrical generation system upgrade for Forks of Salmon school

Located off the grid in a remote part of the County, the school generates its electricity with two old, oversized diesel generators. GHD was engaged to find a solution to reduce costs and improve reliability while incorporating renewable energy.

We assisted the School Board in obtaining funding and designing a diesel battery hybrid system that is “plug and play” ready for the addition of photovoltaic panels pending additional funding.

Humboldt Bay Power Plant nuclear reactor dismantling

The Humboldt Bay Power Plant, which was the first nuclear reactor ever built in California, has been out of commission for several years. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has begun the dismantling process and is removing the diesel and natural gas generator units to make way for a new power plant.

GHD is providing the structural engineering for the dismantling of the fossil fuel portion of the plant as well as performing the lead and asbestos surveys for the demolition. Our structural engineers are developing plans for the rigging and removal of the fuel rod rack from the containment pool to allow PG&E to remove any nuclear fuel remnants. To aid in the dismantling, we are designing access roads, which may also lead to the site design for the new power plant.

Tasmanian Operational Frequency Standard Change,

GHD completed system studies, reserve impact and requirements of under frequency load shedding, special protection systems changes and negotiations with AEMC and AEMO to allow connection of a gas fired power station.

 

Taysan Copper Mine, Philippines

Taysan Copper Mine

GHD has examined the feasibility of providing power to the proposed copper mine in Taysan 110km south of Manilla and an associated port facility. The type of fuel, location of generation and transmission options were examined.

GHD prepared the pre feasibility and feasibility studies to replace an ageing conventional steam plant with high efficiency gas turbines (GE LMS 100) and was engaged as Owners Engineer to assist in the implementation and execution

GHD was engaged to undertake a site feasibility study (geotechnical, water and gas resources), engineering designs (solar field and power block) and grid connection studies.

 

Frances Bay Zone Substation, NT Power and Water Corporation, Darwin

GHD developed the concept design to secure power supply to Darwin. Detailed civil, structural, primary and secondary designs included the rearrangement of the existing underground cable network..

CopperString EHV grid augmentation

GHD developed a strategy and regulatory concept for connecting the north west mineral province to the northern Queensland network. GHD managed negotiations with State and Federal governments, Ergon, Powerlink, AEMO and end-user customers.

GHD undertook the concept design, prepared the technical specification, route selection and detailed design for a 220kV transmission line and substation at Cape Preston for a large scale magnetite project in north-west Australia.

GHD provided full line service to obtain the connection agreement, registration of the plant in the NEM, development of models and settings, connection negotiations with Ergon, R2 testing and plant commissioning.

 

EIA for a 2750MW 1912km HVDC transmission network, HidroAysen, Chile

Hidro Aysen

GHD prepared an EIA for a power transmission line spanning 67 municipalities along its 1912km length. This included 160km of submarine cable, converter and substations, and transportation.

GHD provided technical services including R2 testing and generator registration in the NEM, power quality assessment and connection negotiations with AEMO and Essential Energy

 

Coal to the Rescue in Chile

Chile is a country with a heavy reliance on hydropower and gas fired combined cycle. However, a crisis in the supply of gas to Chile forced many of the gas fired plants to swap to expensive imported oil as replacement fuel. The long term solution for base load power is the development of coal fired power stations and more hydropower.

GHD’s Santiago office is playing a major role in the development of new power projects in Chile and nearby Peru with significant roles in environmental permitting and project development. One of these roles is Owner’s Engineer to Colbun for the development of a 350MW coal fired power station.

Cogeneration plants increase energy efficiency

Two new 140MW gas-fired cogeneration units in Western Australia were the latest projects delivered through GHD’s long relationship with leading energy infrastructure company Alinta.

The cogeneration plants deliver more than 75 percent energy efficiency, compared with 25-50 per cent for other power plants operating in Western Australia. The recently completed cogeneration units are located within Alcoa’s Pinjarra Alumina refinery in the south-west of Western Australia. The combined output of the units is 280MW of power, and up to 840tph of steam.
