Freedom Tower, New York, USA

GHD was contracted for material inspection services related to the construction of Freedom Tower, the first of four towers that will encompass the new World Trade Center on Manhattan Island in New York City.

Our team carried out plant inspections of the fabrication of steel structures and anti-corrosion procedures for the Freedom Tower, which will dominate the site of the former twin towers, rising to a height of 1776 ft (541 m)..

Initially, GHD verified all certification documents and the welding and painting procedures. Visual inspections and dimension checks were then followed by non-destructive testing (ultrasonic and magnetic particle) of joints, and wet and dry films of exterior cladding.

GHD carried out surveillance of the fabrication of extra-large steel sections and the welding of thick steel plates required for extremely complex joints configurations. Control at the plant was essential for the smooth installation on site.
