The San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor, West Harbor Renovation Project consists of the redesign of complete renovations for the 325-berth marina. The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department administers the marina.

The marina project is funded by a loan from the California Department of Boating and Waterways. GHD prepared complete design-build RFP bridging documents consisting of plans and specifications for demolition of existing berths and construction of reconfigured berths in the West Harbor, upgrade of electrical and water dock utilities, installation of new barrier-free access gangways with security gates, construction of a new 300 foot long concrete floating breakwater and an 185 foot long cantilever sheet pile breakwater, repairs to the revetment, earthen mole removal, maintenance dredging, and improvement of the landside buildings.

GHD completed an extensive alternatives analysis for reconfiguration of the berths to fulfill the California Department of Boating and Waterways loan requirements for funding the project. Review of multiple floating dock and wave attenuator systems allowed the design team to develop a familiarity with dock types that function well in larger wind-driven wave environments. The team’s engineers and planners met frequently with permitting agencies such as BCDC to obtain valuable feedback as the preliminary design progressed. By meeting with marine contractors to discuss aspects of the anticipated construction, we were able to obtain valuable input for the cost estimates.
