GHD is the first firm in North America accredited by ANSI under ISO 14065 to complete International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) verification services.
GHD is listed on ICAO’s website as an accredited verification body and has a team of lead verifiers that have been trained directly by ICAO. CORSIA applies to airline operators and corporations operating airlines (Operators) conducting international flights. ICAO has 81 countries signed on to participate voluntarily in CORSIA, representing ~77% of international aviation activity.
CORSIA uses a two-pronged approach with the aim of carbon neutral growth from 2020 levels, requiring Operators with annual emissions > 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) resulting from international aviation with a maximum certificated aircraft take-off mass > 5,700 kg to:
- Monitor, Report & Verify (MRV) emissions every year starting from 2019; and
- Offset emissions that exceed 2019-2020 baseline levels every three years starting with the 2021 to 2023 period, if registered with a participating ICAO Member State
Independent third-party verifications of CO2 emission reports and offsets are required under the CORSIA Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) to be completed by a verification body accredited to the ISO 14065 Standard.
CORSIA is a voluntary global scheme with the goal of taking action to tackle climate change, and is meant to be complementary to the broader package of measures to help ICAO achieve its aspirational goal of carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onwards. CORSIA relies on the use of emissions units from the carbon market to offset the amount of CO2 emissions that cannot be reduced through the use of technological and operational improvements, and sustainable aviation fuels. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), domestic and international aviation accounts for approximately 2 per cent of global CO2 emissions produced by human activity.
How can GHD help?
GHD is one of only a few companies accredited as a Validation/Verification Body (VVB) by ANSI under ISO 14065 as a Greenhouse Gas VVB to complete verifications for CORSIA . We also have experience completing greenhouse gas assessments and verifications for small and large airlines under other reporting schemes.
With over 10,000 people worldwide, GHD’s connected global network of greenhouse gas verifiers has been at the forefront of the greenhouse gas field since its inception, completing thousands of validations and verifications for more than 10 years under various global reporting programs. Our team draws on depth of knowledge, lessons learned, and best practices to develop a tailored approach to each project, and we provide a dedicated team with one Lead Verifier assigned for the entire project.
GHD personnel have experience with both the development of greenhouse gas inventories and the validation and verification of greenhouse gas emissions and offset reports at both the organizational and project level. This combined experience enables GHD to aid in the development of easily verifiable inventories, and in understanding the practical implications of an inventory when providing greenhouse gas validation and verification services.
GHD’s Lead CORSIA Verifiers
The following GHD personnel have successfully completed the ICAO CORSIA verification course and have over 50 years of combined experience with greenhouse gas validations and verifications:
Meet Gordon Reusing, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.,Gordon has completed over 500 greenhouse gas verifications with widespread experience verifying fuel monitoring and data management systems used for greenhouse gas calculations, including the transportation sector. He has over 29 years of extensive greenhouse gas quantification, reporting and verification experience across numerous transportation and industrial sectors. Mr. Reusing is identified as an air emissions expert for quantification of greenhouse gas emissions reductions in accordance with GHD's role as a Designated Operational Entity (DOE) for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Gordon has acted as a Lead Verifier, Technical Expert and Principal for verifications of offsets and compliance reports under numerous regulated reporting programs in Canada, the United States and internationally. |
Meet Valerie Chan, P.Eng.Valerie has completed over 300 greenhouse gas verifications with extensive experience verifying fuel emissions calculations from transportation sources. She is a licensed professional engineer, and has been providing environmental consulting services since 2004. Ms. Chan has completed greenhouse gas verifications as Lead Verifier or auditing team member under the UNFCCC CDM program, Verra: Verified Carbon Standard, The Gold Standard, The Climate Registry, regulatory programs across North America, and numerous international greenhouse gas verification programs in Europe, South America and Africa. Her project experience includes validation and verification of emissions from a wide variety of sources such as transportation fuel combustion, industrial processes and power generation facilities. |
Meet Erik Martinez, P.Eng.Erik has completed over 100 greenhouse gas verifications with extensive experience calculating greenhouse gas emissions from sources in the transportation sector. He is a licensed air quality engineer with over 14 years of experience in atmospheric science and greenhouse gas reporting and verification. Erik has broad experience preparing greenhouse gas emissions inventories, and verification reports in accordance with the ISO 14064 standards and reporting requirements. Mr. Martinez has acted as the Lead Verifier on numerous greenhouse gas verifications. He has completed peer reviews and acted as the Technical Expert for compliance reports, emission reduction projects and offsets under regulatory programs in North America as well as international projects. |
As your CORSIA verification body, GHD will provide a dedicated project team that will use their experience to determine to a reasonable level of assurance that:
- The greenhouse gas assertion is materially fair and accurate
- The Operator has reported its emissions in accordance with the SARPs and the approved Emissions Monitoring Plan (EMP)
- The Operator has correctly applied the method of flight attribution documented in the EMP
- The stated amount of emission reductions from the use of CORSIA eligible sustainable aviation fuels is materially fair and accurate
- The Operator has reported its emission reductions from the use of CORSIA eligible fuels
