GHD is celebrating with client Black & Veatch after Yorkshire Water’s Bransholme Storm Water Pumping Station project won the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Yorkshire and Humber 2017 Award in the Infrastructure category.
The RICS regional awards recognise the best projects in the area, with over 35 of Yorkshire and Humber’s most impressive property schemes battling it out for the top honours in eight categories. Our project team’s collaborative approach to help improve flooding protection for 15,000 Yorkshire Water customers, whilst reducing the impact of construction work on local residents, really made Bransholme stand out from the crowd!
Housed beneath a noise-reducing green living roof, the Bransholme upgrade quadrupled capacity to protect homes that had suffered severe flooding. GHD, a leading engineering, environmental and advisory services company, worked closely with AEW Architects to design the superstructure, suspended floors and removable pre-cast concrete structures over the Archimedes screw pumps that support the living green roof.
The judges said: “Bransholme Storm Water Pumping Station is a superb example of contemporary engineering, designed and delivered with the passion and expertise typically associated with Victorian infrastructure. Innovative use of ancient technology combined with a bold and confident architectural response has resulted in a facility that is welcomed by the local community, not just as a ‘flood alleviation scheme’ but as a local landmark; a symbol if you will of a community that will not be defeated by flooding.”
Ben Aynsley, Operations Director for GHD’s Leeds office, hailed the team’s success: “This award recognises the significant achievement of the team in delivering a complex infrastructure project combining historic engineering principles with modern innovations in a contemporary setting.”
Rob Dickson, Associate at AEW Architects, said: “It has been a fantastic experience to work as part of committed and dedicated team. AEW are proud to have helped to deliver a facility that will help prevent up to 15,000 homes from being flooded.”
All category winners will go on to compete against other regional winners at the RICS Awards Grand Final on Thursday 2 November 2017 in London for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their respective category.
