Creating a memorable arrival experience for Adelaide Airport

The Plaza at Adelaide Airport provides a linking space for travellers as they move between the terminal, car park and taxis. Integrating paving artwork, landscaping and a dynamic encompassing structural element, the plaza provides a welcoming space and sense of arrival.

Providing a sense of identity to a vast open public domain required sensitive design at an urban scale.
Our response
The Adelaide Airport Plaza serves as a memorable gateway experience for arrival and departure. At night the frame and mesh is dynamically lit to enhance the arrival and departure experience.
The complex, three-dimensional twisting truss frame, wrapped in stainless steel mesh, was modelled parametrically and was the basis for coordination of all disciplines, for accurate cost estimation and steel fabricators.
This process allowed for continuous, integrated feedback and refinement, and a much faster timeframe for design and documentation than that of a traditional workflow.
The impact
The plaza creates a strong identity for Adelaide and connects the main terminal building with the carpark and taxi terminals.
