Long Bay Primary School's learning block integration

Auckland, New Zealand

Client: Ministry of Education

Sector: Education and Science

Long Bay Primary School had a distinct vision for its new two-storey learning block: to seamlessly integrate into the existing aesthetic and environment of the school.

At a glance

Long Bay Primary School had a distinct vision for its new two-storey learning block: to seamlessly integrate into the existing aesthetic and environment of the school. The aim was to meet the growing demand for additional space whilst preserving the harmonious atmosphere of the school grounds.

The challenge

Long Bay Primary School analysed its enrolment projection, revealing a demand for additional teaching spaces. According to the school’s roll projection, six new teaching spaces were required to accommodate the rapidly growing population in the surrounding area. This critical insight prompted the school to take proactive measures so that the institution is adequately equipped to cater to the educational needs of its students.

Our response

The outcome is a learning block that not only meets the institution’s needs, but also enhances the overall learning environment. We approached the design challenge with a focus on maximising the outdoor area whilst minimising the need to cut into the hillside at the back of the school.

By creating a structure of a narrow footprint, we achieved this goal so that children and teachers could enjoy the best views of the surrounding area and benefit from effective ventilation and natural light.

We developed a contemporary look and feel that harmonises with the surrounding landscape, so that the new learning block blended seamlessly with the school’s existing spatial and aesthetic environment. We carefully designed the new structure to complement the existing colours and materials of the school, resulting in a cohesive and unified overall appearance.

A winding pathway guides students, teachers and visitors to the learning block while connecting it with the existing school buildings. The pathway provides a unique and dynamic approach to access the new area, creating an exciting and engaging experience for all who use it.

The impact

The result is a highly adaptable learning space that ignites creativity and connectivity among learners. With a dynamic and innovative approach to education, this space serves as a hub for both academic and personal growth, fostering a community of lifelong learners.
