Urban development is about the places we live, work and recreate. One of its central challenges is creating financially viable solutions for infrastructure.
Other challenges include integration of infrastructure and place, optimising sustainability, and working with stakeholders and the community to meet their needs. GHD's core purpose is, "Together with our clients, we create lasting community benefit". This purpose fits very well with our role in urban development. We are passionate about working with our clients to solve these challenges. Over a long period, our team has worked on a number of highly successful, award winning developments.
The success or failure of urban development projects goes a long way to defining the places in which we live. Successful projects integrate with their surroundings; allow residents to be part of a community, easy interaction between people and places and they can provide sustainable infrastructure and places for wildlife. This is particularly true for urban renewal projects. As limits are placed on urban expansion there is a growing trend towards urban infill, particularly renewal. Within almost every city there are significant pockets of industrial land that are becoming underutilised. The unlocking of this land for residential and mixed uses represents a significant opportunity to enhance the liveability of our cities, particularly with well-designed renewal that considers aspects such as sustainability, public transport, walkability, and community infrastructure.

Hefei Lakefront City Masterplan
The world is undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in history. More than half of the world's population now lives in towns and cities, and the UN anticipates that by 2030 this number will grow to about five billion. Urbanisation can present challenges in many societies but also has the potential to usher in a new era of well-being, resource efficiency and economic growth.
