AGL Somerton Power Station

GHD provided engineering, procurement and construction management services for the design, procurement support and construction management of four second hand Frame 6 gas turbines for AGL at Somerton, a northern suburb of Melbourne. Extensive modifications were required to convert the units to stand alone peaking units at the site. Nominal station capacity was 150MW.

GHD’s services covered the power island and balance of plant equipment. This included design, documentation, tender assessment and construction management of tender packages for the following new electrical work:

  • Unit 415V motor control centers and associated low voltage cabling
  • Standby power supply, switchboard and associated low voltage cabling
  • Generator circuit breakers
  • Generator phase isolated bus duct
  • Generator step-up transformers and 11kV cabling
  • Generator and transformer protection and associated cabling

This required a detailed interface with the second hand equipment supplied with the four gas turbines, and interface with the equipment in the 110kV substation.

GHD also assisted with the electrical approvals process.
