Auckland Airport Northern Winter Schedule Remote Stands

Auckland International Airport Limited required new aircraft stands within a short timeframe, to cater for future demand.

The airport engaged GHD to design two remote International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) aircraft Code E stands to cater for the 2015/2016 northern hemisphere winter schedule. Understanding the time restrictions for completion of the stands into operation, GHD implemented an expedient pavement design for short-term parking and ultimately long-term taxi-lane requirements. This far exceeded client expectations for future-proofing.

With insufficient time to construct concrete parking pads, the GHD team designed and specified dense, graded epoxy asphalt pads under areas that would bear the most load. The epoxy asphalt is twice as stiff as comparable asphalt mixes and significantly cheaper than concrete. This is the first known use of dense, graded epoxy asphalt in Australasia.

The GHD team developed operational staging plans and construction traffic management plans, which did not disrupt aircraft or airport operations for the short seven-week construction period and the approximate 300 taxi-way crossing movements per day.

GHD assisted Auckland International Airport to resolve an urgent issue with a cost-effective and innovative solution, in a tight timeframe.

The second phase of works commenced in June 2016, comprising the installation of six new high mast light towers.
