GHD, as a partner of the City East Alliance in Western Australia, has helped deliver the Great Eastern Highway Upgrade Project.

The upgrade to Great Eastern Highway represents one of the most significant services relocation and replacement challenges on a West Australian infrastructure project, with more than 80 km of services conduit, including water, gas, power, telecommunications and drainage impacted. Adding to this challenge, the project was delivered within a constrained 21 hectare road corridor used by 55,000 vehicles per day.

To mitigate potential risks, GHD played a pivotal role in developing innovative technology designed to identify clash detection, and better understand the quantity of known and likely services and their relationship to earthworks. The use of 3D modelling technology, called Services and Utilities Infrastructure Modelling was a first for major infrastructure projects in Western Australia.

The introduction of this innovation into the standard services work has resulted in a more robust risk management strategy, an improved delivery schedule, higher levels of safety and improved the quality of design integration across various design elements, including roadworks, drainage and walls.

There is a sense of urgency to deliver smarter, safer and more affordable roads to assist in improving traffic flow. This demands efficient road infrastructure that offers network reliability, certainty of journey time and is sensitive to the environment.

We assist out clients to assess the life of their asset portfolio, explore how to maximise capacity of existing infrastructure and find least life cost alternatives to enhance the performance of their network.

Economic and population growth, greater urbanisation and increased mobility are boosting demand for new infrastructure and services straining the capacity and effectiveness of existing assets. Single mode approaches are no longer viable as governments and stakeholders recognise the need for multi-modal solutions across the whole integrated network.

Across the whole transport spectrum of airports, maritime, roads and highways, rail bridges and logistics, our team provides integrated transport services throughout the project lifecycle - from initial policy, transport planning, economics and business case advice, through concept, procurement, detailed design and construction to operations, maintenance and asset management.
