Coomera to Helensvale Duplication

GHD was engaged by Queensland Rail through a design and construct contract with Golding Contractors to provide the detailed design and site support services for the Coomera to Helensvale Duplication project.

Coomera to Helensvale is the only section of single track remaining on the Gold Coast line and is a relatively long section of single track, approximately 8.2 km in length.

The design of civil and structural works is such that construction can be undertaken during train operation without the need for track closures. GHD worked closely with Golding Contractors to align the design solutions with the preferred construction methodology.

The development of the design required the close consideration of the existing infrastructure, specifically the existing bridge piles and foundations. The majority of the existing bridges are founded on raked piles that extended under the duplicated alignment. GHD prepared discrete 3D modelling of the existing bridge foundations and used this information in the preparation of the proposed design solution as a means of clash detection.

As part of the civil design scope, GHD integrated the rail systems (signalling, communications, overhead wiring) scope that was delivered by Queensland Rail. GHD successfully managed this integration and developed a number of design alternatives to allow appropriate maintenance to occur by resolving access constraints and clashes between Over Head Line Equipment with barrier foundations as well as the timing around the transfer of the existing signalling located on the western side of the corridor to the east.

Within current Australian bridge design standards, there is a lack of explicit requirements or guidance to consider Rail Structure Interaction (RSI) for bridge design. GHD adopted the detailed RSI analysis as part of the detailed design for the Coomera River Bridge that provided an improved understanding of the rail bridges’ response under load as well as the realisation of some significant design efficiencies and construction cost benefits. The design approach was independently reviewed by an international bridge design firm.

GHD developed a 3D visualisation and fly-through of every element of the duplication.

The final deliverable was an interactive Unity standalone executable file. From the executable was a captured fly-through video over the railway duplication showing off the new line, bridges and infrastructure, and a video of the train driver’s perspective on the new line travelling from Coomera to Helensvale.
