Estimation of Groundwater Environmental Water Reserves for Aquifers and Aquifer Systems, Victoria

As a consequence of Council of Australian Government (COAG) reforms the Victorian state government committed to establishing environmental water reserves for aquifers in Victoria, which take into account the need to protect the integrity of the aquifer and the needs of groundwater dependent ecosystems.  

GHD investigated current and alternative approaches to determining environmental water reserves for aquifers in Victoria for the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the National Water Initiative.

GHD also developed a methodology for establishing environmental needs of groundwater systems.  The company has since carried out a successful trial of the methodology developed on part of the Glenelg Hopkins catchment in south-west Victoria.
