The Forrestfield Airport Link is an 8.5 km rail line running between Perth Airport and Forrestfield, Western Australia (WA). The $2B state government-owned project began construction in 2016 and is scheduled for completion in 2020.

GHD was engaged as the lead consultant for the Salini Impregilo and NRW Joint Venture (SI-NRW JV) Design and Construct lump sum tender and coordinated all multidisciplinary engineering, geotechnical and architectural design inputs.

The design team included Geodata Engineering, GHDWoodhead, WestonWilliamson+Partners and Coffey. GHD also coordinated and assisted with preparation and delivery of the tender submission documentation and subsequent presentations to the Public Transport Authority (PTA) WA on behalf of the JV.

The landmark transportation project is designed to expand public transportation options for the foothills area, as well as improve transportation options to and from the airport across the rail network. It will connect an increased number of TransWA services to Perth Airport and provide access from more than 200 regional towns.

Specifically, the project will link the Midland Line, just past Bayswater Station, to Forrestfield, running underground in twin bored tunnels underneath the Swan River, Tonkin Highway and Perth Airport. Included are three new rail stations, namely: Airport West Station (located underground in Belmont); Consolidated Airport Terminal Station (located underground at Perth Airport to service both domestic and international flights); and Forrestfield Station.

Key project and engineering design elements included:

  • One Swan River crossing
  • Twin tunnels 7.1 km long, with dia. 6,170 mm
  • 12 concrete lined cross passages
  • Three emergency egress shafts (double cylindrical)
  • Over 20 km of rail track
  • 60,000 concrete lining segments
  • 875,000 m3 of excavation
  • 160,000 m3 of concrete
  • 3,000 new car parking bays
  • Four years to design and construct
  • 10 years of operational maintenance
  • Fully compliant with QHSE standards
  • Office of National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR)
  • Accreditation

Some of the key challenges our team overcame include deep excavations in soft ground near Perth Airport’s control tower, crossing the main drain with dive structure and re-use of excavated materials. Innovative strategies were employed to minimise impacts on the foundation stability, optimise the propose dive structure, and identify potential spoil re-use of materials up to 95 percent.

Delivered on time and budget

Tender design and documentation were delivered on time and budget at Concept, Preliminary, Final and PTA submission milestones. Key deliverables included:

  • 600Gb of data created
  • 3000 pages of paper submission
  • 1200 drawings
  • WMV (3D Video Animation)
  • Documents submitted in multiple formats
  • Positive interactive workshops with PTA
  • Contractor and sub-contractor scope workshops
  • High level of client satisfaction

As a result of our success on this project, GHD is delivering the detailed design and coordination of inputs from the other designers, as well as construction phase support.
