Perth Gateway WA – Design groundwater level determination

Main Roads Western Australia engaged GHD to advise on the Perth Gateway WA – Design Groundwater Level determination.

The Gateway WA Project included a major upgrade of road infrastructure in the area around Perth Airport. Due to a relatively shallow depth to groundwater within the project area, development of a project-wide design groundwater level was key in allowing the design and specification of pavement structures and several large bath structures that required dewatering.

The approach in defining design groundwater levels for road design purposes involved achieving a balance between high additional costs associated with conservatism in prediction of high groundwater levels and the risk that these groundwater levels would be exceeded.

GHD identified various areas where groundwater level data was lacking, and developed a groundwater monitoring network to provide project wide groundwater level data. An algorithm was developed to allow the calculation of historic maximum groundwater levels for those areas where historic data was lacking.

A final design groundwater level surface was developed and incorporated into the infrastructure design. This allowed road planning and design to be completed with confidence that the infrastructure would not be impacted by groundwater, and that construction costs were minimized through prevention of excessive ground-filling.
