A spectacular new roof and feature lighting consolidate the status of Khalifa Stadium as one of Doha’s premier developments.

The Khalifa Sports City Development Committee awarded GHD two contracts to redevelop the Khalifa Sports City. The scope of the work included an upgrade of the stadium and landscape redevelopment over an area of 95ha.

GHD delivered the engineering design, project management and construction phase services for the AUD$170 million stadium upgrade, which included the new roof and lighting arch.

“The western stand of the stadium now has a new high-tensile shading structure with a spectacular lighting arch erected over the opposing eastern stand, to provide visual and symmetrical balance for the roof’s curved lines,” describes GHD’s Mike Kemp.

Other works included increasing the seating capacity to 40,000, with VIP and corporate lounges and new athlete, media and administrative facilities.

In the Khalifa Sports City landscape contract, GHD was engaged to prepare the detailed design and construction tender documentation. These works involved extensive landscape and external works including plantings, paving, car parks, water features, and other urban design elements, as well as civil infrastructure.
