Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture Master Plan

Share on:

Client: Gold Coast City Council (GCCC)

The Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture project is a Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) initiative investigating integrated urban water management. The aim is to drive more sustainable urban use of the region’s water resources.

GHD assisted GCCC in developing a range of 11 possible options and a final recommendation of the preferred option. In order to determine which option was the most suitable for this development a Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) was used to evaluate and assess each option to obtain the most practical outcome. This analysis incorporated a triple bottom line approach in which social, economic and environmental factors were all considered equal.

Each option had a range of key elements which needed to be addressed. As a triple-bottom-line approach was taken, each of these elements were categorised as social, economic or environmental factors. Some design solutions which incorporated the key elements included:

  • Reducing reliance on the main water supply, with the use of rainwater tanks, dual reticulation and grey water recycling in each home
  • Stormwater management techniques such as swales and vegetation and wetlands to reduce the amount of stormwater entering the system
  • Education of the broader community about sustainable water use This area of the Gold Coast is largely undeveloped, allowing the Council to implement key recommendations of the report without the need for extensive, and often costly, processes of retrofitting old infrastructure.

Integrated Water Management

Integrated Water Management (IWM) is a strategy that brings together all facets of the water cycle — water supply, sewage management, water treatment and stormwater management — to achieve strong triple bottom line benefits.

Around the globe, we now recognise that water demand and water supply are not in balance. Our professionals understand the interrelation and importance of water reuse, stormwater, groundwater and seawater as essential additions to the traditional water sources from dams and rivers. We offer IWM strategies that are inclusive of these sources and provide long-term sustainable solutions.

As the world’s population grows and our standards of living improve so does our need to manage the water in our environment. We need to maximise its application for human well-being and minimise impact on the environment. GHD engineers, scientists and planners can provide sustainable, cost-effective and innovative water solutions.  We assist water utilities and others who provide water services to optimise infrastructure and adapt to environmental changes in ways that balance the needs of our communities. And we enable clients to meet compliance, improve profitability and maintain their commitment to sustainability.

GHD continually expands the boundaries by engaging in research, enhancing existing systems and strategies, evaluating new procedures and transferring technology from other industries into the water industry. We work with our clients through all project stages planning, investigation, design, delivery, operation and renewal.
