Modern trams are complex and sophisticated vehicles. They
incorporate many systems and components that have to comply with a
wide range of specifications, regulations and legislative
requirements, as well as being fully compatible with each other and
with the specific characteristics of the fixed infrastructure.
Assurance of the design and delivery process required GHD's
extensive and detailed knowledge of all these factors, helping to
avoid delays and additional cost.
The detailed design and manufacturing of the trams was
undertaken in Spain. Conformity and compatibility issues with the
infrastructure, being designed and constructed in Edinburgh, had to
be resolved on an evolving and ongoing basis.
By regularly visiting the vehicle manufacturer's factory in
Spain, GHD reviewed the manufacturing activities against design
drawings and specifications. Corrective measures were monitored and
assessed and the construction and delivery programme was reviewed
to judge compliance with the project timescales. This allowed the
client to respond proactively to programme and cost risks, and
retain close control of project outcomes.
